ELGO-DIMITRA is a public research organization supervised by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. Its mission includes the promotion of innovation in agriculture, forestry, food safety, and sustainable land management. Through its research institutes and experimental stations across the country, it supports scientific excellence and evidence-based policy-making in rural development. The Forest Research Institute of Thessaloniki (FRI) is a specialized research unit focusing on forestry, ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and forest ecosystem services. It operates under the Hellenic Agricultural Organization – DEMETER (ELGO-DIMITRA), which is the national body for agricultural and environmental research in Greece.

Internship description (the tasks, responsibilities, benefits) :

We are offering a 2–6 month internship opportunity within the Forest Research Institute of Thessaloniki (FRI), part of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization – ELGO-DIMITRA. The intern will support research activities related to the assessment of ecosystem services in agroforestry and forest landscapes.

This position is ideal for students or graduates in environmental science, forestry, ecology, agronomy, or related fields who are interested in interdisciplinary research on nature-based solutions, biodiversity, and sustainable land management.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting field and desk-based assessments of ecosystem services
  • Assisting in spatial analysis (e.g. GIS mapping, land use classification)
  • Contributing to literature reviews and synthesis of scientific data
  • Participating in the development of multicriteria evaluation frameworks
  • Helping with data processing, visualization, and report preparation

The intern will work closely with researchers and technical staff in a collaborative, knowledge-sharing environment. Depending on interests and skills, the internship can also include involvement in citizen science tools, biodiversity monitoring, or rural policy-related studies.
