CONTEXT OF THE RESEARCH :

Triticale, a product of the hybridization between wheat and rye, is a species notably sensitive to pre-harvest sprouting, which can significantly impact harvest quality. To mitigate this risk, seed dormancy is acknowledged as a primary factor contributing to resistance against sprouting. While varietal differences exist, the genetic basis of resistance to sprouting in triticale remains underexplored. As part of the RUSTRIT project, funded by the FSOV (Fonds de soutien à l’obtention végétal), the GIE triticale, INRAE, and ARVALIS are undertaking a series of initiatives aimed at developing molecular markers associated with genetic resistance to pre-harvest sprouting to facilitate breeding efforts.

In this context, a biparental population (a susceptible variety crossed with a resistant variety) of triticale was planted at the ARVALIS experimental station in Villiers le Bâcle. The integration of genotyping and phenotyping within this population is expected to facilitate the identification of genetic factors associated with resistance to sprouting.

INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVES :

  1. Assess the degree of resistance to pre harvest sprouting of the triticale varieties cultivated in the trial.
  2. Assessing the dormancy levels of these varieties
  3. Verify the consistency of the results obtained with those from other partner trials.

 

PROPOSED METHODS :

  1. Work and bibliographic synthesis on pre harvest sprouting and its genetic determinism.
  2. Appropriation of the testing protocol and operational methods for assessing resistance to germination in the field and the dormancy index of varieties.
  3. Analysis of variance concerning the results of the Villiers le Bâcle trials and additional trials established by the partners.

REQUIRED PROFILE :

Engineering student or equivalent (EQF6-7)

Expertise in agronomy, plant physiology, and/or genetics as applied to selection. Proficiency in IT tools and statistical methodologies (Excel, R).
