A Comprehensive e-Learning Journey for Tomorrow’s Agricultural Advisors

Modern agriculture faces pressing challenges, including climate change, resource scarcity, and economic shifts. Agricultural advisors play a critical role in helping farmers adapt, but they require continuous education to stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and sustainable practices. The needs analysis highlights gaps in skills and knowledge that limit advisors’ ability to effectively support the sector’s transition toward resilience and sustainability.

The Erasmus+ AGRIFOOD4FUTURE project addresses these challenges by developing a lifelong learning curriculum for agricultural advisors. By enhancing advisors’ expertise in innovative technologies, climate change adaptation, and best practices, the program strengthens their capacity to guide farmers in adopting productive, sustainable, and future-ready agricultural methods.

The AF4F Training Course for Agricultural Advisors

This exciting program provides Agricultural advisors with the latest tools to guide farmers toward smarter, more sustainable practices. The training course for farmers’ advisors was developed through a collaborative effort, with each module proposed and designed by a partner organization based on their respective areas of expertise and focus within the agri-food sector (see the figure below).

Overview of The Training Course

Duration: 18h /// Online training in English /// Free of charge

  • Module 1: Smart agriculture
This module introduces smart and precision agriculture, highlights the role of digital and IoT tools in data-driven management, and explores agroforestry as a nature-based solution. The module concludes with practical insights into implementation, decision-support tools, and real-world applications. Participants gain both conceptual understanding and applied skills to support farmers in adopting sustainable, technology-enabled agricultural practices across diverse contexts.
  • Module 2: Precision agriculture
This module addresses needs analysis findings by covering GPS, RTK, and precision agriculture techniques, targeting gaps in sensor-based solutions and digital tools for crop management. It enables participants to assess GPS correction methods and recommend best practices, building practical, technology-focused skills to drive innovation and efficiency in the sector.
  • Module 3: Climate Smart-Farming
This module introduces agricultural advisors to the concept of climate-smart farming, focusing on how agriculture can adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. Participants explore the impacts of climate change on farming systems, including increased drought, soil erosion, and water scarcity.
  • Module 4: Regenerative agriculture
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to regenerative agriculture, with a focus on its application in vegetable cropping systems. Participants learn about farming practices that restore soil health, increase biodiversity, and contribute to climate mitigation through carbon sequestration.
  • Module 5: Energy Cover Crops for Biogas Production:
This module develops advisors’ skills in energy cover crop production, integration, and management, addressing needs in renewable energy and resource optimization. It supports sustainable energy management through training in species selection, nitrogen calculation, and best practices.
  • Module 6: Food Footprint: The Environmental Impact of the Agro-Food Chain
This module introduces learners to the concept of environmental sustainability within the agri-food sector. It explores how agricultural activities impact the environment and emphasizes the importance of sustainable development. Participants learn to assess sustainability through the triple bottom line—environmental, social, and economic dimensions—and understand key challenges such as climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity loss.
